When most Americans picture a scientist, they likely imagine someone with institutional permanence—a tenured professor, a department head, a principal investigator with a named laboratory and a stable salary. That image has always been partially mythological. Today, it is increasingly disconnected from the actual conditions under which American science gets done.

The workforce that produces the majority of peer-reviewed research published from U.S. institutions is composed largely of people who hold no such security. Postdoctoral researchers working on two-year contracts. Adjunct instructors teaching laboratory courses without benefits or long-term employment guarantees. Soft-money researchers whose positions exist only as long as their grant funding continues. Graduate students whose stipends, when calculated as hourly compensation, often fall below the living wage in the cities where major research universities are concentrated.

This is not a peripheral phenomenon. According to data from the American Association of University Professors and the National Science Foundation's Survey of Graduate Students and Postdoctorates, contingent and non-tenure-track appointments now account for the majority of academic positions across American higher education, including in the sciences. The implications of this structural shift extend far beyond individual career hardship. They reach into the content of science itself.

How Job Insecurity Shapes Research Choices

A researcher whose next appointment depends on demonstrating productivity within a compressed timeframe faces a set of incentives that differ fundamentally from those facing a tenured colleague with a secure position and a long planning horizon.

For the contingent scientist, the calculus of research design is shaped by necessity. Projects must be completable within grant cycles. Findings must be publishable in high-impact journals to support the next application. Methodological approaches must be defensible to grant review panels whose composition reflects established disciplinary consensus. And the topics selected must be legible to funders—whether federal agencies or private foundations—whose priorities are shaped by public visibility, commercial potential, and political context.

High-risk, high-reward research—the kind that challenges foundational assumptions or pursues questions whose relevance may not be apparent for a decade—is structurally disadvantaged within this framework. A postdoctoral researcher who spends three years on a project that produces null results or arrives at an unpublishable conclusion has, by the metrics that govern academic hiring, failed. The incentive to pursue safer, more predictable scientific questions is not a character failing. It is a rational response to an irrational system.

Several researchers interviewed for this analysis—speaking on background given the vulnerability of their employment situations—described making explicit decisions to avoid certain lines of inquiry because the timeline for meaningful results was incompatible with their contract lengths. One described abandoning a promising but methodologically complex research direction in favor of a more incremental approach that could generate publishable output within eighteen months. "I knew which project was more important," the researcher said. "I chose the one that would keep me employed."

The Publication Pressure and Its Distortions

The relationship between contingent employment and publication pressure introduces a second layer of distortion into the research record. Scientists under employment pressure are more likely to engage in practices that have been associated with the reproducibility problems extensively documented in the scientific literature—selective reporting of significant results, flexible data analysis approaches, and the strategic framing of incremental findings as more novel than they may be.

This is not to suggest that contingent researchers are less ethical than their tenured counterparts. Research on publication bias and questionable research practices consistently shows these patterns across career stages and employment types. The point is that the structural pressures on contingent researchers intensify the incentives that produce these behaviors across the board.

The consequences compound over time. Fields where contingent labor is concentrated—which increasingly means most fields—develop a published literature that is skewed toward positive results, incremental advances, and commercially adjacent questions. The map of what is known reflects not only what has been studied but who was in a position to study it and under what conditions.

Which Questions Go Unasked

Perhaps the most significant and least visible consequence of research workforce precarity is the systematic underdevelopment of certain areas of scientific inquiry.

Research on conditions that disproportionately affect low-income populations, rural communities, or demographic groups with limited political power tends to attract less commercial interest and therefore generates fewer of the industry-funded positions that have partially compensated for the erosion of public academic employment. Research that challenges the efficacy or safety of existing profitable treatments faces not only scientific scrutiny but institutional resistance that contingent researchers are poorly positioned to absorb.

Environmental health research, particularly work examining the effects of industrial chemicals and agricultural practices on human health outcomes, has historically depended on a relatively small number of investigators with both the institutional security and the career longevity to sustain long-term exposure studies. As tenured positions in relevant departments have declined and been replaced by contingent appointments, the pipeline of researchers capable of pursuing decade-spanning longitudinal studies has narrowed.

The NIH's budget allocation patterns offer an indirect measure of which areas receive sustained research attention. While federal funding priorities are shaped by many factors, the concentration of grant dollars in areas with established commercial partnerships—oncology, cardiovascular pharmacology, neuropharmacology—reflects in part the structure of a research workforce that has become dependent on those partnerships for employment continuity.

Structural Responses Worth Examining

Scholars of science policy and higher education have proposed several approaches to addressing the conditions described here, each with its own trade-offs and political feasibility constraints.

Expanding the proportion of NIH and NSF funding directed toward longer-duration grants—five to seven years rather than the standard three—would reduce the frequency with which researchers must interrupt scientific work to pursue renewal applications, and would make longer-term, higher-risk projects more viable for investigators without tenured positions.

Several research-intensive universities have experimented with creating non-tenure-track research scientist positions that offer multi-year contracts, benefits, and defined pathways for advancement without the teaching obligations of traditional faculty roles. These positions do not replicate the protections of tenure, but they provide substantially more stability than the postdoctoral model and have been associated with improved research continuity in departments where they have been implemented.

Federal policy requiring that a defined percentage of grant overhead recovered by universities be directed toward researcher salaries and benefits—rather than institutional infrastructure—has been proposed as a mechanism to improve compensation conditions without requiring new appropriations.

The Broader Significance for Scientific Knowledge
